A juxtaposition of old and new, Wā has recently had the pleasure of witnessing the completion of The Orange, a new mixed-use development integrated with the refurbishment of the historic Orange Coronation Hall on Newton Road, Auckland.  The Orange Coronation hall was designed and constructed in the 1920s, and the building has had many functions over the years; in the 1930’s – 1950’s it was a popular dance hall, and later a performing arts school and a church.

Wā was invited by Crosson Architects to provide the landscape design for the courtyard between Orange Hall and the new mixed-use building, and the surrounding streetscape.
Following the architect’s playful theme of all things orange, a series of folded steel planters were proposed, cupcake-like in shape, a reference to the dance hall era of dresses and treats. Additionally, a sequence of fox trot dance steps have been sand-blasted into the courtyard paving, both reminding users of the hall’s past and perhaps inspiring future dances and romantic rendezvous!

We look forward to seeing the refreshed Orange Coronation Hall evolve and grow into its next phase of development as an important urban residential and social hub. – NC
